SNES was far more powerful. The difference in colors on screen is staggering and if you listen to the symphonic music of Castlevania 4 or FF4 and then listen to even the best of Genesis, it sounds like a chicken scratching. The "faster CPU " effect was mostly just marketing with Sonic. A fast scrolling screen was possible on NES, let alone SNES. The CPU in reality should have little bearing on that (though the RAM would). It would presumably help in on-screen characters, but if you ever played Smash TV you would know that SNES had more than enough processing. And that's before getting into the then-state of the art Mode7 3D.
