Donkey Kong Country didn't have any special chips, if I remember correctly. Yoshi's Island, Starfox, Stunt Race FX and a few others did but Nintendo was pretty proud of having DKC run with just the power of the console. Now, if you're talking about NES games like Castlevania 3 and Super Mario 3, then yeah. Donkey Kong on the SNES? Nah.

DKC didn't used a chip. They rendered the characters on workstations (Silicon Graphics if I'm remebering it correctly) and transformed on sprites to give the game a more advanced look. It was the first home console game with pre-rendered graphics (Killer Instinct was the first on arcades. I believe).

Yes, I remembered back in the day how that impressed me, Yoshi Island used the FX Chip for it´s neat effects, but DK was all SNES with no steroids added.

It was such a simple time, nowdays nothing impress the kids anymore, all the magic is gone...
