Well, ESRAM there to aleviate the real bottleneck that is the rather slow DDR3 (sematics really) if it was not there, performance would be much worse!
but it's only one of the causes for the performance level of the xbox 1:
- The GPU itself is comparatively slow (well balanced with the memory it has really)
- The OS is heavier than PS4s (that could be fixed)
