No worries on the confusion... this should make you feel better about your concern:

Microsoft recently announced a new policy that any game updates that are necessary to be able to play or have an advantage online must be free.

Example: An FPS update that releases a new map can cost $$, because you can still play with folks on the old maps. But an update with a new weapon would have to be free. Gears of War was like this, the first update was free, the new maps were $$.

Another example: Marvel Ultimate Alliance recently released an update with more playable heroes. If you want to play the heros yourself, you must buy the update, but if your friend buys the new heros and you want to play with him, you can download a free update that lets you play with him, but you can't play the heroes.
