Game plays close to skyim, yet people saying it looks terrible? Seems people just want to hate on the game without merit.

No. The problem is collision detection is terrible, it doesnt feel like skyrim at all (the customisation is completely different aswell), its not visceral at all. Also, it doesnt feel like an Elder Scrolls game. Its a WoW clone, theme park type of MMO. There is no open-endness you would expect from Elder scrolls games.

That is why it gets trashed. Cause instead of doing an Elder Scrolls game, they did a poor WoW clone. They were afraid to believe that people would accept the Elder Scrolls design on an MMO. Dumb mistake. That is exactly what people wanted. Now, they are gonna try to push this out of the door and have it sell on The elder scrolls brand. I imagine it will get ugly and will go F2P really fast.

Believe me, i was excited for this game. Thats why i am so direly disappointed. You can check all of this on the Neogaf thread.

Ah, a beta player.

Is it possible they can fix some of those issues before and after release? Or are they pretty fundamental to the game?

No - They can't fix it.These are design choices and they designed the game around it.
This game will of course release unfinished like most MMORPGs which is acceptable to some degree but it is far off from a needed quality standard at the moment.
It played in the beta like they don't know what they want to do with the game.
On one side they try to have a Elder Scrolls feeling but on the other side a really really bad version of WoW shines through and this hurts it.
They didn't want to go their own way and instead tried to play it safe with creating a bad WoW clone and screwed even that up.
Every new MMORPG has a chance for 1 month to impress the big part of the people who are going to buy it > They will probably fail harder than Star Wars The old republic did back then.
They were afraid to go their own way and will pay the price with going F2P pretty soon which will drop the quality more over time.

You either copy WoW good/perfectly and add some new things and your own style to it > Wildstar(for example as far as i can tell from the Beta) or you go really your own way which would have been the best for Elder Scrolls Online.
This MixUp thing doesn't work - You have to bring a clear message and a certain degree of quality standard.
Big part of the 1st month community(at least on PC) will be (active and inactive)WoW players searching for something new and they get a bad copy of the game they either played or didn't like and at the same time they don't get a real Elder Scrolls...

Oh and the Elder Scrolls name will hurt it probably more than helping it too in the current state.
People without clue(didn't play beta or read in general not much about it) expect a Elder Scrolls/Skyrim with Online Multiplayer - They don't get that. They get something completely different than they expect.
It will sell a lot of units and have a lot of players in the first month cause of the name but people won't like it and obviously wont extend their Subscription.
This game will damage the brand unneeded and hopefully didn't take time and money away from a real ES Game.
