The difference was everyone knew how to drive and knew Nurburgring really well. The threat of permanent damage keeps the rookies away. When I break on time in a normal race there is a big chance the person behind me crashes into me pushing me off the track.
It's not perfect though, a few races later a laggy portugese guy unintentionally took out most of the field.

It also helped that I remembered to put spoilers on the car this time. No wonder I couldn't keep up before.
