You say he spends money and therefore isn't saving money, quite right. It's like a Buy 3 get a 4th Free deal in a supermarket. People will buy 3 knowing they got the 4th free but really they only wanted 1 which was cheaper.
And he is saying, instead of buying 10 games this year, all at £15 second hand 6 months after they were in shops, he paid £35 once. 'Rented' or not, he played them. And that is what being a gamer is about, playing games.
Eitherway.... so? Both PS+ and Xbox Live are in reality as waste of money. Just like gaming.

You're on the money.
People see something is cheap and usually jump on it, regardless if they wan't it or need it or not.
It's like with Steam sales, because games are so heavily discounted, people buy them up in droves, yet, if you didn't buy it, you would have saved more money as no money was spent.
Also an interesting fact is that people spend more time buying games on Steam than actually playing them.
One of the big issues I have with the game schemes Xbox Live and Playstation has is that you don't get to choose what games you wan't, if you don't like any of the games on offer, you are bang out of luck.
Plus, they're behind a paywall, thus they're not really free, just stupidly cheap.
Steam's free games are ligitimatly free, you're not renting them, buying them or spending a single cent or required to access them, I hope Sony and Microsoft see Valve as more of a competitor this generation, it would be good for everyone's wallets with any luck, free multiplayer and free games is hard to argue against.
