There are several lessons:
- Core Gamers, in spite of being heavily represented online and in the gaming media, really are not that important to the success of a console; essentially, if you target the Core Gamer demographic at the expense of more General Gamers, Casual Gamers, Non-Gamers and New Gamers you will be fighting to be a successful niche product.
- Graphics have advanced to a point where gamers (in general) are comfortable with their representation of game worlds and are far more interested in interesting gameplay than shiny graphics.
- Analysts may get a lot of press but have little insite into the direction of the market
- Third Party Publishers can (in their attempt to anticipate the reaction of consumers) act like lemmings and move in the wrong direction; this is in part because of their dependancy on analysts.
