For myself I've learned that happiness is over-rated. The reasons why are numerous but the main one is that the unhappy parts of life are necessary to fully appreciate the happy ones. Of course, I could be wrong. What is your experience?

I basically agree with you, but I wouldn't say happiness is over-rated. I would more say unhappiness is under-rated. Or better yet, the ups and downs of life are under appreciated. Life is a roller coaster. You can't have the thrilling ride without both the ups and downs.

 And I believe we are here to experience.  Experience joy, experience depression.  Experience the thrill of overcoming terrible obstacles.   Experience a lazy day, doing nothing at all.
