it downloads all updates in the background, I also buy stuff on PSN on my computer all the time and the PS4 will have it downloaded and ready by the time I turn it on. It's convinent for users I guess. Example yesterday I turned it on and it told me it updated Warframe, DCUO, Zen Pinball I think and something else. It boots a bit faster and you can charge things on the console too, my PS4 control never dies cause of this :)
