Good press for people outside the gaming crowd also helps console sales. The Wii has benefitted tremendously of the coverage it has had in the mainstream media around the world. Heck, even my grandmother knows about Wii nowadays and she has no clue of the other consoles. The people outside the gaming crowd are often the people buying or funding consoles, so it does matter wether or not the general public is even aware of a console and it's benefits. And of course reaching for people who don't play is also the way to expand the market for gaming overall.
