I think somehow the meme that a VIDEO camera is required for MICROPHONE functionality has just somehow taken over. Possibly due to XBone's Kinect being "associated" with voice control and that carrying over to general console gamer perceptions, even though such an association with a VIDEO camera makes zero technical sense, and said voice control functions should work with ANY microphone. I believe since MS removed the requirement to have Kinect plugged in, that you actually can still use voice control if you have a microphone plugged in. Apparently both Sony and MS are happy for people to have this misunderstanding if it leads to them selling a more expensive product. |
This kind of blows my mind, but the reality is, since some of the best in game applications for Kinect on the X360 were voice commands, consumers began to associate one with the other. It's gone out of hand now that many consumers actually believe something like Kinect is necessary for voice recognition, voice commands, etc. but whether it was intentional or not, one must give kudos for the successful creation of a fallacy many have swallowed hook line and sinker.
In short, if it doesn't require facial recognition, motion sensing or motion activated user input ("motion controls"), Kinect isn't necessary; a simple mic will do.
