I know that were all entitled to our own opinions but quality should be defined by sales and not one's or a groups opinion to eliminate the bias. I never said that you weren't allowed opinions on a games quality but it should be percieved as personal quality and not general quality. How people know that one product is better than the other product is by spreading the word. A large brand does NOT grow overnight, it needs time. It's true that there has to a person testing out the product at first but in the long term if one person sees more quality in a specific product compared to it's competing product it is likely that the person as well as others will start reccommending one brand over another. Sales numbers alone will tell us what the general population prefer over one another therefore it's safe to say that we have enough info to define quality. I don't see people calling GTA V or Halo trash, now do we ? Like I said, people don't buy the games that they don't like. Your right about how your opinion of a game compared to the millions does not make YOUR opinion any less relevant, however the mass markets purchasing decisions ARE more relevant than your opinion. Quality is recognized by MANY and NOT just by the FEW. |
General quality does not exist. We're not the borg.
What happens are societies spread the word on what some people like, trend setters lets call them. Other people at whom the product was targeted to may agree and the product gains popularity. This does not mean the product has quality in general as you say. It just means that theres a large number of people to wich the product appealed to. Theres also a huge number of people the product didnt appeal to aswell.
The number of people that gets the product does not reflect its quality. It reflects its appeal to the market.
I will give you another clear example. Do you know those belly straps said to help you lose weight? Those sold like crazy. Do you think they are any good for losing weight? Losing weight is a mathematical equasion aswell. You need to spend more calories than the ones you ingest. Sitting down with a strap on your belly. Does it sound like it will achieve that goal?
