I hadn't played Metal Gear or Metal Gear 2 before I played Metal Gear Solid. They talked about the stuff that happened in the past in MGS (like with Gray Fox) so that I really didn't feel like there was something I was missing. Oh, and not to mention the briefing clips that helped a little bit to establish some things as well.
However, it was kind of cool to get a chance to go and play it in MGS3: Subsistance.
