The Gamecube era wasn't a smash hit but wasn't it still profitable? 

It was profitable due to their handhelds

the gameboy color, gameboy advance and even N64 contributed to sales and income during the gamecubes first fiscal year on the market,  Nintendo has taken down their full year numbers from 2001 and 2002, but from 2003 to 2006 the amount of revenue generated from consoles (since Nintendo separates them out) dwindled.
