Sony didn't want to be second with the PS3 just like Microsoft didn't want to be second with the XBO. Sony lost with the PS3, just like MS is losing with the XBO. Spin it all you want there is no way Microsoft wanted to be anything but first place this gen. 

Nobody wants to not win. This is the goal of the fanbase, which in both gens, have adapted to the situation and made a realistic goal.

I don't buy that. Microsoft does not come off as the kind of company that settles for second place. 

well first the gen is not even 6 month old so declaring a definitive winner is dumb.... but on top of that sales number does define the true position of a product for a business.... the true objective for MS SOny well any business is not to be first in sales even though it is usually linked.... it is to be first in net profit....
and at that game I'm pretty sure MS is still first with the last gen and still could be first this gen if the gap stays small and they monetize properly....

and I'm dead convinced that they could come back to first place before the end of the gen with the right exclusive content (games, video, music and services) the right marketing and the right price point.... if in a few years they become more agressive than PS4 and are at a lower price than the PS4 with a game or 2.... sales during holliday season could easily go their way....

so far I'm sure XBO will be a bigger success for MS than PS3 was/is for Sony.... and thisgen IMO will be way more exciting than the past 2 for fans and gamers in general...
