It is interesting as about 0.5 separates half a dozen games.
In playing it, I am not sure where they could knock it down -- other than it is a tick slower than Melee. Also, Nintendo's on-line not being Xbox Live causes others to deduct the score. But there are some reviewers that appear to be giving it demerits because it does not do everything they wanted it to do (i.e., it only has two non-Nintendo characters).
Also, there are a lot more reviewers today and many are placing a more critical eye on games than in the past (while others just like to be PITAs). This trend makes it more difficult for newer games to have higher scores -- making what SMG did even more impressive. Still, SSBB is fourth for this generation, trailing only SMG and two incarnations (Xbox 360 and PC) of the Orange Box.
(Only six of the top 20 games of all time on Gamerankings.com are from the current generation. And that includes two PC clones: SMG, Orange Box (360 and PC), SSBB, and Bioshock (360 and PC).
