To speak in generalities is to generalize the subject matter. That's like starting out a sentence by saying "I'm not trying to be a dick about this, but..." and then go on to sound like a dick. You're basically saying "I'm not trying to generalize people..." then you go on to generalize them. Do you see the issue, and do you see why it might come off as a little bit narrow minded?
P.S. I'm not at all calling you a dick, it was just an example :)
