The fact that they aren't older makes it even more bold.

And take a look at the first minute of the DLC. Ellie thinks Riley was dead. She's kinda shocked and I don't know maybe I am just imagining that there is something more there.

Ellie: "I haven't seen you in I don't know how long..."
Riley: "45 days.. 46 technically."
Ellie: "All this time.. I thought you were dead."

Riley keeps count of the days even!

Come to think about it, didn't ND said that we could be more "playful" in this DLC than in the main campaing?

It's not like we saw Bill get intimate. It wasn't needed really. I can see them showing subtle cues that will have some people argue that they were more than friends.

And in a world like this, having only one friend could easily make you like.. develop other feelings possibly. Supposedly Riley was Ellies ONLY friend according to the comics!

Not to mention Ellie's fascination with Bills magazine. Almost felt like the first time she came across that :P

And then there's this:

"Ellie returns as new light is shed on her relationship with Riley, her best friend from the military boarding school they both grew up in. After inexplicably disappearing for weeks, Riley reemerges in Ellie’s life with a surprising revelation. The two sneak out of their school for the last time, leading to a series of events that will forever change both of their lives.

Naughty Dog continues to explore the themes of survival, loyalty, and love in their first ever single player DLC with The Last of Us: Left Behind."
