All three console developers are going to have problems this generation.
Nintendo - Where the f**k is the software? The Wii U launch was great (2nd best ever at the time), but to release literally nothing for 8 months is a surefire way to make people lose interest in your console. From August to December we got Pikmin 3 (Niche title), W101 (Super Niche title), Wind Waker HD (Remake), Wii Party U, and finally Super Mario 3D World. Only SM3DW had any potential to move a bunch of consoles, and with the heavy supply of Mario games in the last 6 years, people just are not nearly as hungry to play Mario as they were in 2006. Even if their future lineup boosts their Wii U sales by alot, their peak at this point is no more then 65 - 70 million, and thats only if they give the Wii U a 3DSesque lineup. The 3DS is going good, nothing else to say.
Sony - The lack of 1st party software sold by Sony is disturbing. The 1st party game attach rate on the PS3 is a 1.35, and that's including all the bundled software. Without the bundled software that number may not even be at 1. That would mean that there are millions of PS3 owners out there, who never purchased one brand new 1st party Sony game. To make matters worse, The Vita's entire 1st party lineup has been outsold by Pokemon X/Y...twofold. Unless things change this generation, Sony could sell 100 million PS4's and still easily go broke. This is what happens when 80 percent of your 1st party games can only be played by people older then 18, and when your one game aimed towards everyone (LittleBigPlanet), is focused on level creation and things that most casual gamers couldn't care less about.
Microsoft - I have alot of mixed feelings about Microsoft this generation. Part of me thinks that alot of gamers are sick of their garbage (RROD,anti-consumer policies, lack of Kinect support) and will reject it in favor of the PS4, but their is also a part of me that thinks that Sony has little to offer in terms of 1st party games and Titanfall / Halo 5 will be more then enough to get the console ahead of the PS4. The thing to watch for me is what Microsoft does about the price. $499 for a video game console is just too much for the average person to spend, expecially with an extra controller, games, and Xbox Live.
