Yep. The PS3 didn't pass the GC in launch-aligned LTD sales in either region until sometime in 2009, as shown here:

Of course, the "PS3 is the next GameCube" claims weren't the only predictions made early in the seventh generation that were way off the mark. In 2008 the IDC thought the PS3 would pass the Wii in LTD sales in 2011 (basically, the opposite of "PS3 is doomed!") and that the 360 would fizzle out and sell only 40 million units. Of course, the PS3's sales grew enough to disprove the doomsayers but not enough to confirm those who though Sony would have already won by now, while the 360 had a solid rebound in Europe in 2008 and in America in 2010 after flat annual sales in those regions. Point being, when you're this early in a generation, it's too early to call, and you can't say "Doom!" based on a single bad year. Sales can often do very unpredictable things. We can reasonably infer that the Wii U will most likely place a distant third this go around, but anything more specific is just guess work. We don't know if it'll sell 20, 30, or 40 million.

I'm guessing theres a reason you split the numbers into JP and US and pretended europe didnt exist other than your mentioning of just japan and the US, could you be a doll and post the EU and wodlwide graphs too?
