I got pretty close to the end of the game but stopped playing it (was pretty common thing years ago for me)

Get some friends round to help you or don't bother.  Single player really isn't a lot of fun.  Magic is out of the question for 99% of the fights except casting heals on yourself and mog will moan all_the_damn_time about carrying the chalice.
