So was the PS3, at least in America and Japan. You didn't read my thread from a couple of days ago, did you? Simplistic "System A is trending ahead/behind System B" analyses, assumptions that things will be business as usual, etc., etc., are not exactly the best method to project future sales, insofar as much as they can be predicted at all with any amount of accuracy. We all try to predict, and almost all of us end up way off the mark. Predictions based on then-current trends were all over the place early in the seventh generation. Some people thought the PS3 would end up being the next GameCube, while others thought it would have passed the Wii a long time ago. Others thought the 360 would dominate the generation, while others still thought the 360 had peaked and would wither away, selling sub-SNES numbers. Some thought the Wii would outsell the PS2 (and before it came out some thought it would sell like the GameCube). While some estimates are more or less reasonable than others (higher estimates of the Wii U's possible sales, such as those that put it over 50 million over its whole life, are highly improbable), the system's fate is far from sealed. We don't know if it'll sell worse than, the same as, or better than the GameCube. While I think it can do better than the GC, that doesn't mean it will, and I realize that the doomsayers have just as much chance of being right as those of us who have cautious optimism about the system's future do. The best we can do is make semi-educated guesses.
