Actually that's not 100% correct either. There's no mention in the bible of god giving any orders etc. to Onan.
It's Onan's father Judah who asks Onan to make a child to his brother's widow, Tamar. (god killed his brother, pretty much just because he didn't like him) Onan has sex with her, but instead of cumming in her, he pulls his dick out and spills his semen on the ground. Why? Because the child wouldn't be considered his own child.
God didn't like that behaviour so he killed Onan as well.
