Smartphones and tablets has still negatively impacted 3DS sales though, but the strengths of the 3DS has managed to mitigate the impact some what.

There really isnt much proof to that. The numbers between DS and 3DS has actually been very similar to one another throughout their first 35 months. I am not saying it will sell as much as NDS lifetime but there is no proof of any of this at this moment.
There really is no proof of mobile gaming effecting handheld gaming at all. PSP had similar issues PSV had later in its lifecycle because Sony stopped supporting it as well. Most of its numbers actually came early on when people had faith in sony for their handheld division. That changed overtime and part of that can be blamed on hacking and another part of it can be blamed on the lack of support. They relied a lot on third party with PSP.

I'm sorry... but I am going to have to totally disagree with you here.
There is plenty of proof.
This gen of handhelds will do circa 50% of the last gen in total.
Whats more.... it was very predictable and fairly obvious to many many posters here, which is why I dont understand why two large corporations didnt see it coming.

Agree. I think a lot of people only look at the sales impact (which is proof enough really) but there are other impacts as well. People are spending a lot of their time on their smart devices, they are also spending a lot of their money on smart devices and apps etc. All the factors will have a negative impact on dedicated handhelds.
I dont think this is disputable at this point..i mean theres been research done on this. People just need to take the time to look
