As far as TVs are concerned, it's all about price and content.
Many people don't realize just how long the 1080 res adoption rate was; I'm talking into mass households. And, most importantly, until 4k content (cable/satellite/streaming, discs) becomes an industry standard to show the pixel for pixel advantage that 4k has over 1080p, people just aren't going to pay a premium for upscaling.
Once enough content is out there and prices reduce considerably, then we'll start to see 4k TVs move en masse.
