Yes it was. It has been an emblematic cultural product of that period in the whole UK, while abroad it had to share the glory with Commodore 64. Some tiny british software houses, like Imagine, became milionaire in few months (and then collapsed even faster).
There was no Rare, at that time: it was called Ultimate, instead. An excellent software house, possibly the best. It changed its name to Rare as soon as it switched to the NES.
