I think Nintendo makes the best games for families and little kids just getting into console gaming. I can't think of better games for my family/kids than Nintendo Land and Super Mario 3D World.
Nintendo also sucks terribly at making games for adult/experienced gamers due to their lack of talent or ambition when it comes to online/social connected experiences. Just look at Wii Sports Club on Wii U and the terrible online match making and lack of voice-chat. They also omitted having voice-chat connection on the pro-controller so it isn't just software lacking, but a problem at hardware design level.
They also haven't made any of the shifts that Sony studios like Naughty Dog went to going from Jak & Daxter to Uncharted and The Last of Us. Naughty Dog had to essentially re-invent themselves and scrap all their old code/practices, and adopt lots of new technology and go through some painful times before they were able to deliver on Uncharted and they are a better studio for it.
