If we are just talking about the big 3 hardware makers, Nintendo is easily the most irreplaceable. Sony and Microsoft are so similar that they could easily replace each other in the event one of them goes out of business. Third parties would pretty easy replace the content they make.

Who replaces Nintendo?

Heres the thing, would anyone care if its replaced or not.

Ninty is irreplaceable only to a very small numbers of gamers, to most they are irrelevant.

I tend to think people would care about one of the biggest software publishers and only relevant player in the handheld space going away.

And how many would care if Microsoft or Sony went away?  Wouldn't most of those people just switch to the other and go on playing mostly the same games?

Same goes for those in the handheld space, Wouldn't they just jump ship to psv streaming tablet/phone gaming ?   Wouldn't Sonys fall effect gaming as a whole more then Nintys given 3rd party reliance on their platforms to sale.

The idea with being stuck with Ms lets turn you into slaves and Nintys stuck in the past mentalities sends shrivers into the gamer in me.

Nintendo falling would impact the handheld market, many of whome would switch to psv or mobile.

Sony falling would impact both the handheld and mobile market, given the number of sony tablets and mobile devices they produce, while it would not by any stretch of the imagination be the end for mobile gaming as there would be nintendo handhelds and other mobile devices, in a way sony falling would have a larger impact on mobile gaming, the overall impact would be dependant on if nintendo folded completely, for both software and hardware, or just hardware - if anything nintendo folding for hardware only would actually be beneficial rather than detrimental.
