Nintendo is not indispensable, but they're irreplaceable. Unlike most, they have an identity, a unique way of seeing gaming. This is why many love them so much, and also why a few hate them. And in this modern gaming industry which is largely obsessed with pushing hardware specs, realism, storytelling (specially Hollywood-style), "maturity", and a box-checking approach of development, they're more important than ever. At the very least, their influence is a constant reminder of another side of gaming. The gameplay-focused, arcade-style, light-hearted gaming that I for one don't want to see disappear.
