I think $400 would be reasonable but I personally might be able to go a couple of hundred above that if it's good quality and there's widespread support from PC games.

initialy they wanted to make the retail version ~$300, but they stated that recent additions added a bit to the price, so I'd expect the device itself to cost $300-450

but keep in mind that you need a pretty good pc to deliever the minimum of 60 fps you need for an unimpared VR experience, especially if you plan to play more demanding games

Yeah, that might become a problem to all people who play on outdated PCs or a laptop, but I personally think I will be fine since I soon plan to purchase a mighty PC system with the AMD FX-8350 and Radeon R9 290. Together with the Rift it's gonna be so sweet.

The gpu upgrade that most people need will indeed add to the cost. I'm going to wait for the consumer version before upgrading and get the best upgrade at that time, since screen tearing or sub 60fps 1080p 3D is not going to cut it.
Plus what else do you all need? They've added a camera now for positional tracking. A controller is pretty much essential. It would be great if it works with the ps4 controller with the touchpad. Plus a move / kinect like controller seems like a natural fit as well.
