Going gold just means the game is done and being printed, has nothing to do with sales.

Going gold or platinum are terms for reaching a certain number of sales.

I'm just curious if they're referring to customer pre orders or the number that will be at retail on launch. I can't imagine this game will sell 500K in the first week, maybe 200K.

No, when a game in development goes gold it means its done and being made.
