You mean besides the transitition between USB and ethernet interfaces that adds further unnecessary packet latency?

Has this been tested or is it just an educated guess?

It's not "tested", it's well known that translation between protocols incorporates latency. In the case of Ethernet over USB, you have frame packet latency (3 packets + 1 ZLP needed to transfer 1 ethernet frame packet, each incorporating latency of it's own for communication protocols between each USB packet, then the latency taken to merge these packets). Depending on the architecture of the device, USB also generally has to navigate through a smaller bus before being introduced on the same bus level as most Ethernet devices (once again, not always the case).

There's a chip on the mb of the PS4 that does the same, so it doesn't seem to be a problem. If its hardwired, I can't see adding any noticable lags.

Let me simplify it for you...

If you attempt to use Ethernet over ANY form of USB, you will incorporate latency. I don't care if it's noticable or not to you...

I don't know why you brought up the PS4, since it already has an ethernet port, so the problem doesn't exist (unless you're using an ethernet USB dongle, to which everyone would ask "why?"). We're talking about Ethernet over USB, not straight ethernet connections...

EDIT: I have to add how incredibly hilarious it is to believe that something hardwired means infinite efficiency....

What PS4 have hardwired with Zlib is video stream compression/decompression for the share function, don't know anything about ethernet or wifi having dedicated chips to help using over USB.

Once again, PS4 Eihernet is NOT over USB. It's not a hard concept to understand.....look at my previous reply.

I don't give a rat's arse what kinds of other things the PS4 is "hardwired" with. The topic is about Ethernet networking vs Ethernet over USB networking.
