Stonghold can be used as a descriptive word you know.

Like how? People on my floor at the office like strong coffee, but because we got a new colleague who likes Cappuccino we are losing the last stronghold of strong coffee?

Metaphors, how do they work?

I know how it works but ''stronghold'' when you are talking about sales of a game console in a country? Haha that's really pushing it.

Combining the word ''war'' with the word console is pushing it even more.

I know it's even funnier, didn't think that one up though. But seriously, an Xbox stronghold?

Well given "console war" has been around as a phrase for a few console generations I'd say stronghold is the perfect word to use for a country where sales of the console concerned has been higher than the competition, particularly where the competition has won out in nearly every other market. Or in the case of Europe in absolutely every other market.

And "war" has been used in retail competition terminology for decades. Ever heard of a "price war"?

Stronghold is a defensive construction. So unless Microsoft pilled up thousands of Xbox consoles to prevent ships from delivering any PS4's to the UK, using the term ''stronghold'' is just plain silly.

Good lord you really don't know how metaphors work. If you can only conceptualise stronghold in a literal sense then the use of this term in the context of console sales dominance in a market is beyond your comprehension. You really don't see that in the metaphorical sense MS had appeared to build up a market (a metaphorical fortification) in the UK which was capable of defending against (i.e. getting more hardware sales, hence a strong wall, i.e. a loyal consumer base) PS4?

If one is going to borrow terms from war to describe competition in the console market then what do you think is a better description for an apparently secure market for a console?
