They better make a profit, or else what is the point? I heard it is profitable after one game, sounds plausible.

most manufacterers don't profit from the start, Nintendo right now is profiting because of the yen and because of the high 3DS sales, the WiiU still has a negative effect on their profits, but it'll turn a profit soon enough.

If they make a profit after a console and a game, which is safe to say is at least what the most casual gamer in the world buys, they are in a amazing place: they will cover R&D with, probably, less than 10 million units and the lifetime of the console will still be pretty healthy, even if it finishes last.

That is the magic of a sustainable business model, it is not a war at all, you do not have to win freaking nothing to get the big bucks =D
