my laptop is still kickin' not sure if the surface 2 pro is worth paying more money for to be honest

IMO,  surface 2 pro is not worth it unless you really want to run programs other than from the windows store.   I just recently got the Surface 2 RT for christmas and it is really awesome.  I have a desktop at home and a macbook pro too, but I wanted a tablet that is easier to store/carry to my classes.

And I was bummed it couldn't do itunes either, but I started looking at Xbox Music that is installed on it and it's really good.  I mean it is free with ads or $10 a month for no ads.  You can do radio stations too.  Or you can just add music albums to your collection to listen anytime.   I get an ad about every 7-10 songs I listen to so it's not that bad.   You may have used xbox music before, but if you haven't I recommend it.  I'd honestly rather just keep using the free version to listen to any song I want with an ad thrown in every once in a while than use itunes.

can you put your music on a usb, drag it to xbox music through the surface 2, and sync your ipod??

I'm not sure about syncing an iPod.  But you can put music on a USB and transfer it to the surface.  Then in xbox music you can choose which folder xbox music will pull music in from and will show up in your collection.  I did about 100 songs and they all work.  As long as the music isn't m4p they should work.  iTunes music was m4p(protected) before 2009, but after that they are all m4a so you can play them on pretty much any device.
