I don't think it was the devs' fault. They have to work around ridiculously tight milestones anyhow, and trying to release the game with the movie due to some executive's boneheaded decision was the main issue here. The sad truth is most of the time it is the marketing department, who don't have the foggiest idea about software development, that dictates the development schedule, not the developers themselves.
