The SDK is fine. Some limitations but people are complaining because that's what people do, they freaking complain.
Apple is trying to keep the device secure, that's all. They allow VoIP on WiFi, just not over Edge. It would be funny to use the unlimited ATT data plan to make VoIP phone calls and not use any minutes ;) But ATT would not be too happy with that.
Also, emulators, virtual machines and browsers are not permitted because they open the platform to applications outside that would not be distributed/authorized by Apple, it makes sense to keep my iPhone running well and without crappy virus and malware.
Does anyone complain about MS/Sony and Nintendo when they protect their systems the same way? Would Sony, Ms or Nintendo allow 3rd party browsers or emulators or Java on their systems? Not likelly.
BTW: The SDK is awesome, I'm really happy I know Objective-C/Cocoa/OpenGL and OpenAL pretty well ;)
