Just go look at Segas Genesis sales, its very similar to the PS3 situation. It sold a respectable number of consoles, but the software sold terribly, and then they just started to throw anything at the wall to see if it would stick. C'mon, you can't seriously say the PS Now is something for a quick buck.
Sony has invested million into cloud technologies with Gaikai to transform the PlayStation brand into a service, something for the future. You'll still need to rent your games, so its not like they are doing an Oprah here. They're future proofing their business, which is extremely important in the longrun.
