Best story-wise JRPG?

If you want something that focuses on one character and his life story: FFVII Crisis Core.

If you want something purely old school medieval go with FFIV.

If you want political turmoil and a war storyline go with either FFTactics or FFXII.

Other RPGs that have a storyline that is pretty great are the Kingdom Hearts series.

I also recommend Star Ocean if you want futuristic or Xenosaga.

If you want something that is in general not too complex or simple cant go wrong with the Tales series as all games have a different setting, characters and overall storyline.
