I know there's a marijuana thread, but I wanted to debate this specific topic. If the mods close this thread, then I'll understand. So,why should marijuana be legal. There's no real benifit 2 it at all. All it does is make you a lazy unproductive member of society. What good does that do to be high all the time and do nothing in life, but live for that high. Anybody that wants to use it for medical purposes is just using that as an excuse to get high. according to my reading, the drug produces anxiety, fear, distrust and panic. It also affects your posture, coordination and reaction time. It can also cause dellusions and hallucinations. it can also increase heart rate and cause sleep impairment. How does all that give you these magical medical benefits. I just don't understand what's so great about this so-called magical drug. For the record,I don't understand the point of booze and tobacco, but those things are legal. Why make just another bad thing for you, legal. It benifits no one. If I had my way, booze and tobacco would be outlawed. There's no benefit in any of these things.

To be honest, your opinion seems so prejudiced/set in stone that I doubt anyone could possibly convince you, even if he had the best arguments. But I'll try anyway.

You seem the have the usual "all in all, marijuana has more negative than positive effects, so it should be illegal"-attitude that from my experience is widespread mong people who've never actually taken it. But that applies to all drugs, and the hypocrisy is astonishing, as most of these people would never even consider prohibiting alcohol despite being even more dangerous, because that's a drug they are consuming as well, so they would invent a thousand more or less laughable reasons for not banning alcohol. Hell, they don't even consider it a "drug", just because in their mind, "drugs" are what people consume that they despise - not themselves, of course! You however want to ban alcohol too, which is rather unusual - but in the end, that only suggests that you consume no alcohol as well.

Thing is: Yes, all in all, all drugs are rather negative than positive, including of course, marijuana. But that doesn't imply that banning them is a great idea. Think of marijuana prohibition like alcohol prohibition: Legalizing a drug does not mean that the drug has a "national seal of being harmless" or even being a positive thing - it's just the lesser of two evils. It's acknowledging that people who take drugs don't just take them for fun (even though many drug users will cheat themselves on that question), they take them because they have problems, so they should be helped, not punished, especially since by taking drugs they only hurt themselves, not others.

I know, the comparison is somewhat flawed, but imagine a country trying to fight depression (or, say, kids cutting their skin with knifes) by simply outlawing it. It wouldn't stop people from being like this - it would only stop them from talking about their problems with others, making their situation even worse.
