You have to remember Metal Gear is a much bigger franchise than DMC. Even then it hasn't sold that much better. In the US and Europe DmC and MGR sold about the same. Its in Japan where MGR has done really well, even then the game has been met with a mixed reception in Japan.
DmC's problem was the poor timing of release. God of War Ascension didn't sell that well either, neither did many other games that came out under similar circumstances, such as Dead Space 3 or Crysis 3. It was a bad time to release this game.
Either way, the point is Ninja Theory will keep making their own games and Capcom will probably continue making DMC games themselves. So the fans who wanted the Nero and Kyrie story to continue will get their sequel. I don't see a problem with that.
