Most successful does not only mean sales. People like to fall on that defense but the truth of the matter is that it made the biggest impact in a positive way compared to other Final Fantasys. For instance, people still want a remake, and we have movies, animes, sequels, and prequels. Other than the fact it sold more compies than the rest, it is still in the top 10 most classic PSone download on PSN since 2009.

But nobody wanted those sequels, prequels, animes and movies in the first place. All that people wanted was a remake.
As for your "opinion", seems like you're the "herd" type of guy. Any opinion of your own on this matter? You're trying to rationalise which game is the best based on numbers. You're not even trying to find and discuss about any of the inherent qualities found in those games. You're just spitting S-E's claims about the game and pass it as a be all end all argument. Really weak, if you ask me. It doesn't prove the game is the best. It proves it was the most popular. This topic isn't about which game was the most successful sales wise, it's about which one is the best. There's certainly no way in hell you're going to convince anyone here that because S-E said something, they should do like you, stop thinking on their own, and accept that they have to think the same as S-E.
And history is a good reminder that what is most popular isn't always what's best.
