What does he mean by prettier extensions of last generation games?
Isn't that inherently what EVERY generation is?

Maybe the 16-Bit era could be a prettier version of the 8-Bit era but many of the design issues of the prior era were fixed.  The 32-Bit era was like a whole new era as far as gameplay and game design.

I'd say the 7th gen was a big leap due to the online components added to gaming. Even the 6th gen (PS2 era) offered a huge evolution over the fifth.  I'm sure it will happen but, for me, it's just not easy to see what the 8th gen has added aside from Higher Definition graphics.

I was talking to my friend at work that got an Xbox One.  He traded his PS3 and 360 and all of his games AND a couple that I loaned him!  Anyway, I asked him how he was enjoying his Xbox One and his NBA and Soccer game.  He said it was great.  When I asked him what it did differently (I already knew but I play ignorant in public) he was like "You can watch TV on it, you can tell it to turn itself off, etc"  and I replied "Well, my TV has picture in picture already!  And couldn't you tell the Xbox to turn itself off with Kinect?"   He couldn't tell me anything the Xbox One did that the 360 didn't--though the One probably does everything better.  The only thing we agreed to were the graphics.

Online, streaming video, video chat, motion controls--pretty much everything we could think of was added to the PS3 and 360.  It's getting tough for developers to come up with compelling reasons to make the PS4 and Xbox One "must have" devices.  It will be the games, though.  It's always the games.

tl:dr  all of the launch games are ports and the ones that aren't ports seem like they could be done on the 7th gen games if you scale them down.
