Could be playing multiple games at once, or multiplayer games, ect.
Like my last game of 2013 was Super Mario 3D World with a friend. My first of 2014 was Link Between worlds by myself.
Others could have played call of duty ghost before midnight, then next day picked up a single player game like Last of us or a different multiplayer game like Fifa 14. Or had friends over for new years and played guitar heror or wii sports or something before midnight. I highly doubt they would wake up in 2014 and pop in one of those games to play solo.
Very easy to switch around games. You make it sound like once you start a game you play it till your bored or beat it then put it aside and pick a new game to solely focus on.
