For all the girlfriend-impaired folks out there, I'd suggest a read of the classic "Men are from Mars..." and Deborah Tanner's "You don't understand". Much better than any pickup advice you might find on the internet.
Also, be fun and flirt early. And stop commiting the sins of gluttony and sloth if it's your case.
