1) I've bought three retail games on my Wii U. Pikmin 3, SM3DW, and Wind Waker HD.
2) Which I buy depends entirely on the game and the prices. If they're the same price, then it's all about how frequently I think I'll be playing the game and if I think I'll ever sell it.
3) The only situation in which I would pay a little more to have the digital version would be on my 3DS. Swapping out discs from my Wii U isn't a bit deal, but there's no way I'll buy something like Pokemon or Animal Crossing in physical form and keep having to either bring all my games with me or just not switch games on the go.
But really, it mostly comes down to price. I almost always wait until I can get a game for pretty cheap. Nintendo has recently come out with a pretty big batch of games I'd like to get sooner rather than later however, so I decided to treat myself and spend more than I usually would. The main reason I bought Mario and Zelda digitally is because between the Deluxe Digital Promotion, Club Nintendo coins, and discounted eShop cards at Best Buy, these full-price games became thirty-somthing dollar games. The choice was obvious. And the reason I bought Pikmin digitally was because it was one of those nearly extinct cases for me where I wanted a game the exact second it released and wanted it loaded and ready to go at all times, and I had no intention of ever selling it.
