It's been so long, it sorta slipped my mind.  Something like

-for the first few days, they tried to live civilly and keep up hope

-all hope was lost and moral broke down.  Every man for himself

-Devil shows up to torment them and the miners band together

-still no hope.  Devil makes a deal with them and promises to let them go free if they pledge loyalty to him

-some crazy twist

-miners make contact with the upper world

-rescued and vow never to speak of what happened down there

That actually sounds pretty interesting.  You should write it.
