I find the restocking argument frustrating. Yes, Sony can only sell as many consoles as they make, but production already started in Sep, so they would have already got 1 million units ready for the American release. We know that they can produce 1 million (perhaps less in Sep) a month, so taking the pre-stock into consideration, that would be 4 million by years end: Sep > October > November > December. I'm guessing 3.5 - 3.7 million by years end. This site is undertracking the PS4 by at least 250,000 - 300,000.
