To really be effective it would need to come down to 400$.
But even then, it would only match the PS4 - supposing Sony doesn`t cut the price. And in terms of popularity, so far, PS4 is the most popular of all consoles.

Don`t forget that sharing a big number of titles with XB360 and staying in that price range for a long time will cut into its sales.

PS2 sold the way it sold but it started at 299$ and had a (mass) appeal no console has now.
